Peter Dinklage strolled onto Reddit today to answer a variety of questions from fans and promote a Kickstarter project for funding the independent film “Little Feet.” The AMA blew up to over 12,200 comments. Dinklage’s AMA proof video alone has racked up over 47,000 views. We’ve gathered some of the most fascinating tidbits to save you from scrolling for the rest of the day.
Dinklage was actually on the lookout for unusual questions during the process. “I just figure that there are already a million mainstream places to check if someone wants to know whether I’ve read the book series. I’m enjoying this as a place to weigh in on other, more important matters. Like hummus,” he said. So, yes, in case you were wondering, Dinklage seems to really like hummus.
A lot of “Game of Thrones” filming has taken place in Croatia. Dinklage reports that the actors often rent a boat and cruise around the islands on their days off. “The best part is that at the end of the work day, since it’s very hot there and we’re in these hot costumes — heavy leather and armor — some of us rip off our clothes and just jump right into the sea. Well, not all of our clothes. You know what I mean. But it’s invigoratingly cold, and always a joy,” he says.
When first approached for the role of Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones,” Dinklage was concerned the fantasy genre meant the role would involve “a really long beard and pointy shoes.” Once convinced of the complexity of the character, he signed up.
While many of the finished scenes between Tyrion and his sister Cersei (played by Lena Headey) are fraught with tension, the actual atmosphere on set is quite different.
“Sometimes we have to avoid eye contact so we don’t crack up! It’s funny that sometimes people think with these serious scenes, people think the mood on set is very serious, but sometimes the most serious scenes can produce the most laughter on set,” said Dinklage.
From the Teen Beat files, Dinklage takes his morning coffee with milk and no sugar, and prefers onions and peppers for pizza toppings. No mention of hummus here. He has also met people with dogs named Tyrion, and a woman with kids named Arya and Sansa. Now that’s fan dedication.
A few other interesting notes culled from the AMA: Dinklage would love the opportunity to play Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Bryan Singer, director of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” had to call Dinklage’s agent to ask permission to talk to the actor before casting him in the upcoming film as scientist Bolivar Trask. Dinklage was delighted to accept. The actor would also choose flying for a superpower if given the opportunity.
When asked what souvenir he would like to keep from “Game of Thrones,” he answered, “I’ve got a lion ring that’s pretty cool. And my scar.”
Let’s wrap this up with a request from Dinklage for fans who see him on the street. Don’t try to sneak a picture from afar or make your kids go up and pretend to ask for directions. He would rather you just walk up and ask for a photo.
